It was the first time I came to understand that there is an extensive body of research literature on topics related to teaching and learning. Eventually, I became the Penn State PI for the coalition and held that role for seven years, which allowed me to understand more and more about engineering education. When the Penn State principal investigator for the ECSEL Coalition went on sabbatical, my associate dean asked me to serve as the interim PI. My participation in ECSEL put my feet on the path that allowed me to have the job that I have now, as director of the Leonhard Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Education in the Penn State College of Engineering. The NSF ECSEL Coalition was really a transforming experience for me and other faculty members who were involved at that early stage of our careers. The experience in the ECSEL Coalition helped me understand the full scope of engineering education and the many things that could be done as a scholar of engineering education. Five years later, I had the opportunity to become involved in the National Science Foundation’s ECSEL (Engineering Coalition of Schools for Excellence in Education and Leadership) Coalition, which was a coalition of seven schools that were working on integration of design across the curriculum. These high ratings brought me to the attention of our Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, who offered to send me to an ASEE (American Society for Engineering Education) meeting. He began his career there as assistant professor of mechanical engineering and held a leadership role in the NSF-funded ECSEL Coalition. In some courses the students must develop material to justify their design decisions to regulatory agencies and the public.Įthical questions concerning relationships with clients, regulatory agencies, and other professionals also are considered as well as global and contemporary issues.Tom Litzinger has worked at Penn State University since 1985. Therefore, designs must consider performance objectives, costs, environmental impacts, and legal ramifications. The courses are intended to simulate a real-world design experience. No strict rules are imposed on each course since flexibility is needed for different types of design projects. Often practicing professionals will review a project or act as part of a juror panel. Several capstones involve practitioners in the project formulation, or for the supply of input data. These courses involve teamwork, report writing and/or oral presentation of the project, open-ended problem solving, and multi-disciplinary coverage. Each capstone design course provides sufficient experience and opportunity to apply material learned in previous courses. This focus does not mean that the design is related only to one narrowly focused topic. At least one course is provided in each major civil engineering focus. The Department has six capstone design course options. Participating companies reap benefits as well building relationships with students and getting new ideas for real design problems. Senior-Year Capstone Design Projects offer students the opportunity to get involved in sophisticated engineering design challenges. Alternatively, you could wait for the high-end Apple Silicon based machines. If you are considering the high-end Mac Pro in the quest for ultimate performance, then we would suggest that you also look at the Windows platform as there is a larger choice of high-end CPU’s and dedicated GPU solutions for the professional CAD and 3D modelling market. These have a base configuration of 16GB Unified Memory which you may wish to increase to 32GB if you create large or complicated models. The ‘sweet spot’ for the current Apple hardware and Rhino are the 14” and 16” MacBook Pros. The table below summarises the suitability of the current Apple Mac range available from Apple in the UK as at : ModelĬonsider upgrading Unified Memory to 32GB* if you create large datasets It is hoped that Rhino v8 will be compliant with Metal. Rhino, like most CAD and modelling software, relies heavily on OpenGL for these tasks and Apple has eschewed this technology in favour of its own pipeline called ‘Metal’. Where you may see performance gains with Windows over Apple machines in Rhino v7 is with the display pipeline. Using Rosetta is essentially a ‘stop-gap’ until Rhino can be made to work natively on Apple Silicon, and this is unlikely to happen before Rhino 8.Īlthough not a native application, Rhino users and McNeel themselves report that Rhino runs well on the M1 processor, and the performance is better than the similarly specified Intel processors. Apple’s Rosetta translation environment attempts to automatically translate Intel applications to run on Apple Silicon. Please note that this implementation is not native but uses Apple’s Rosetta 2. Rhino 7 for Mac is supported on Apple Silicon Macs with M1 processors running macOS Big Sur 11.3 onwards. We strongly recommend choosing a suitable M1 based machine unless you have other compelling reasons to go the Intel route. There are still some products in the Apple range that are powered by Intel processors namely the 27” iMacs and the Mac Pro – these are however due for replacement in the not-too-distant future. Going forward all new Apple Mac laptops and desktops will be built on versions of Apple Silicon rather than using Intel technology. At present these new processors are all variations of the ‘M1’ CPU. Apple is gradually replacing its hardware with machines powered by ‘Apple Silicon’ processors. The authentication process for us to remove two-factor authentication is quite extensive. Click here to learn how to share Polypads with students and how to view their work. End the warm up by asking students to record a prediction of what percent of time they thing three coins will land HHH and what percent of times they think three coins will land TTT. Now is not the time to determine the probability of flipping HHH or TTT - this will come later in the lesson. As time allows, do this a few more times. Flip the coins until you flip either HHH or TTT and see if any students were correct in their predictions. Invite students to share their predictions with a classmate before having some students share with the class. Ask students to predict how many times you'll need to flip all three coins so that all the coins end up the same (either all HHH or all TTT). Click here to learn more about using the Probability and Data tools on Polypad. Actual coins will work great, but you can also use this Polypad. To introduce this lesson, have 3 coins ready to flip. After each set of 25 flips of the 3 coins, students will calculate the percentage of all heads and all tails and graph those results on a line chart. After making a prediction, students will flip 25 sets of 3 coins 8 different times to generate 200 trials of flipping the 3 coins. Forįurther information, consult your state's handbook of Science Safety. In this lesson, students will use the tools on Polypad to flip 3 coins and explore the probability of the coins landing all heads and the probability of the coins landing all tails (or stars on the Polypad coins). It may be possible for the person flipping a coin to alter the trajectory of that coin such that it will land on heads or tails more often than probability would predict. People influence the world around them in many different ways. Though it seems that over a large number of trials a coin will land heads or tails an even number of times, there are some studies that suggest that a coin flip may not be a truly random event. Coin flips are sometimes even used to determine which sports team will start with possession of the ball, which can give a significant advantage to one team or the other. Given a choice between two options, some people turn to the flip of a coin to tell them which option to choose. It offers some of our smallest dimensions without sacrificing quality or fun. When every inch counts, the Cooper Playhouse is where it’s at. Here are some of our favorite picks for small spaces: Playhouses don’t vary in size as much as swing sets do, so even the bigger, deluxe playhouses still fit just fine in most small yards. The Windale also has the added benefit of a multi-level playhouse area. Like the Ainsley, the Windale’s slide and swings face in the same direction, minimizing the space you need for your safety zone. A built-in sandbox saves even more space, giving your little one another classic outdoor toy without taking up any more space. The Appleton Swing Set is another small footprint swing set made with tiny yards in mind. The slide faces in the same direction as the swings (as opposed to facing to the side), so your safety zone doesn’t have to stretch quite as far. The Ainsley’s dimensions and design make it great for small yards. We’ve done the work for you by calculating exactly how much space your kids will need to play safely on their swing set. The real deciding factor is the “safety zone” – an obstacle-free area around the swing set that’s covered with protective surfacing like wood chips.
